SpeedShare Server is an application which makes files on a Macintosh computer available over the Internet. With SpeedShare Server, someone else with the appropriate user name and password can have access to all or part of your documents, so that you can exchange information easily.
Synchronize! Pro 4.0 connects to SpeedShare Server to automatically backup or synchronize files with another Macintosh connected to the Internet.
Initial Setup
SpeedShare Server needs some information in order for users to know how to connect to it. In particular, it needs to be named, and users need to be added. After you've entered this information, making files available on the Internet is simply a matter of opening SpeedShare Server.
Step 1 - Copy SpeedShare Server to the Macintosh computer you want to access.
SpeedShare Server runs as an application (just like a word processor or an email program). Instead of letting you edit documents, it makes the files and folders accessible to someone on the Internet who has the right user name and password.
All you need to do to "install" SpeedShare Server is to copy it to the Mac you want to run it on. No other files are needed.
Step 2 - Open SpeedShare Server
Step 2a. Double-click the SpeedShare Server icon to open it.
You will first see this opening dialog:
Step 2b. Click OK.
Step 3 - First Time Setup
Initial setup of the SpeedShare Server is done in the First Time Setup window:
Step 3a. Choose and enter a name for your SpeedShare Server. This will be the name that will be used by Synchronize! Pro to connect to the server.
Step 3b. Click Next.
Step 3c. Enter the owner name and the owner password. You will use these names to gain access to folders on this computer.
Step 3d. Click Next.
Step 3e. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, or that your TCP/IP connection is set up properly.
Step 3f. Click Start Server.
Step 4 - Setting Preferences
Once you've started the server, use the Preferences to configure the server.
To see the Preferences, use the Edit menu to choose Preferences. There
are several pages in the Preferences window. You can navigate to a
particular page by using the popup menu, or by using the arrow buttons,
or the arrow keys on the keyboard.
If you want full access to all files on this computer, use the owner name and password. No more setup is needed.
However, if you want to allow different people access to only a part of your computer, use the User Setup page in the Preferences to add those users.
Adding Users
To add a user, click New user. Enter the password for that user, and check the appropriate privileges.
Restricting access to a folder
To allow users to see only the files inside one folder on your computer, check Allow Registered Users access only to this folder and below. Click Set folder... to choose the folder that users will have access to.
There are other Preferences pages; you may want to look at them. Additional information on SpeedShare Server is available in the HTML file "Server_User_Guide.html". You can view this file with your Web browser.
Additional flexibility for managing user access, including assigning each user a separate folder, is available in SpeedShare Pro Server.
